Switzerland reaffirms its commitment to Kantha Bopha Children’s Hospitals through a new grant of US$ 12 million
Phnom Penh, 21 December 2016
Phnom Penh, 21 December 2016. The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) confirmed its continued support to the Kantha Bopha Children’s Hospitals last November by granting the Foundation US$ 12 million for the coming three years.
Since 2013, Switzerland maintains an operational presence in Cambodia and is implementing a development country program in close alignment and coordination with the government of Cambodia and key development partners. The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation’s country program focuses on promoting key governance reforms, in particular supporting the democratization and decentralization reform, on promoting agriculture and food security with a focus on poor and vulnerable small holder farmers as well as on skills development and technical vocational education and training.
Its continued support to the Kantha Bopha Children’s Hospitals is also an important part of its engagement in Cambodia. In fact it has been supporting the hospitals since 1994 with a total amounting US$ 60 Mio up to this date. The current annual contribution to the Foundation equivalent to US$ 4 Million corresponds to approximately 10 % of the total budget of Kantha Bopha Hospitals and to one third of SDC yearly budget in Cambodia. In addition to its financial contribution, Switzerland is actively supporting the ongoing dialogue on finding solutions for the long term financing of the Kantha Bopha hospitals.
The Maternity ward at Kantha Bopha III, Jayavarman VII, in Siem Reap Angkor was inaugurated in 2001, and in 2015 a maternity extension opened. Since then, over 1’400’000 pregnancy controls were performed and 200’000 babies delivered, with an extraordinary record of 100 deliveries in just 24 hours reached on November 17th, 2016. The maternity is fully integrated in the children hospital Jayavarman VII, thus ensuring that the immediate care of newborns is optimal. To further support this life-saving effort, the Government of Switzerland recently approved an extraordinary contribution of US$ 2 Million to this outstanding maternity.
